School for Children with Autism Strengthens Family Ties

The Haydée Santamaría Special School in Holguin, dedicated to the care of children with autism. It is strengthening family ties as part of its strategies to ensure the continuity of its programs during the current energy crisis.

Maire Guerrero Ricardo, the school’s director, told CNA that the center holds meetings. Aimed at familiarizing the children with their daily routines, which should be continued at home.

Moreover the teacher indicated that mothers receive methodological training. Focused on understanding the specific characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and each child’s individual needs.

In the care of children with ASD, family support is fundamental to facilitating social inclusion. As a resource for reintegration into mainstream education, the official stated.

Furthermore the Haydee Santamaría School, founded on January 15th, 2015, and with an enrollment of 24 students. It facilitates the correction of difficulties in language, motor skills, learning, and interpersonal relationships caused by this condition.

Holguin also has a personalized diagnostic and follow-up program. That allows these children to re-enter mainstream education. One of the essential goals of special education in Cuba.
