The Mystery Behind Chernobyl’s Blue Dogs Revealed

The blue color of the dogs seen in late October of this year in the Chernobyl exclusion zone in Ukraine. Which baffled the organizations that care for them, is caused by a common dye.

“The blue dye likely came from an overturned portable toilet in which the dogs were rolling in feces, as dogs often do […] The blue color was simply a sign of the dog’s unhygienic behavior! As any dog ​​owner knows, most dogs will eat almost anything, including feces!” explained Timothy Musso, a biology professor at the University of South Carolina, in the Facebook group Dogs of Chernobyl.

In this regard, the expert dismissed the initial theory that the dogs were under the influence of some chemical substance. As well as the numerous speculations surrounding some kind of mutation or evolutionary adaptation. That were actively discussed on social media when the photographs of the dogs surfaced.

Also it is believed that the dogs roaming the exclusion zone are descendants of pets abandoned by residents after the evacuation in 1986. According to Musso, many of these animals are probably “much better off” than they were before the disaster. Mainly due to the small number of humans in the area.
