National Seminar on Calixto García Begins in Holguin

With a tribute to the 206th anniversary of Lucía Íñiguez Landín’s birth, the National Seminar on the General of the Three Wars, dedicated to the illustrious patriot Calixto García, began today in Holguin. Children, young people, artists, and researchers from all over Cuba are participating.

The event, in its tenth edition and scheduled to run until the 11th, is organized by the Martí Youth Movement. With the co-sponsorship of the Major General Calixto García Chair at the University of Holguin. The Calixto García Birthplace Museum, the Plaza de la Revolución monument complex, and the Union of Young Communists.

Reynaldo Zaldívar, president of the Martí Youth Movement in Holguin, explained to the Cuban News Agency (CNA) that this gathering brings together workers and students up to 35 years of age. In the patriot’s birthplace to discuss the figure of Calixto García Íñiguez.

He noted that attendees will present in person works of poetry, essays, narrative, software, music, and other artistic and design expressions. All focused on the actions and thoughts of the Major General during the wars of independence.

Moreover he emphasized the importance of discussing the role and influence of this historical figure in the country from the perspective of children and young people. As well as the inclusion of his figure in educational programs. The event will feature awards for the three best works presented in the categories of Relevant, Outstanding, and Honorable Mention.

The program includes exchanges with key sectors of the región. Such as the Federation of Cuban Women, historians, and museums. Including the General’s Birthplace, the La Periquera Provincial Museum, and the Six Columns Monument, as well as the Provincial Center for Cultural Heritage.

Also the presentations will begin on the 10th at the city’s main institutions. With the judging panels comprised of PhDs and Masters of Science, graduates from the University of Holguin, and historians from various provinces who applied to participate.

The National Seminar on the General of the Three Wars is gaining recognition within the national academic sphere. For its contribution to the study of historiography in Cuba, fostering research on the figures of Calixto García and Lucía Íñiguez Landín.
