Cuban Minister of Public Health José Ángel Portal Miranda met with staff at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Teaching Hospital in Holguin province. As part of the activities commemorating the hospital’s 60th anniversary.
During the meeting, which took place this Wednesday at the institution, founded on November 7th, 1965, by the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro. The minister emphasized some of the hospital’s contributions, including its high birth rate and achievements in assisted reproduction.
He noted the importance of this hospital for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and heart disease in the eastern región. Among the leading causes of death on the island.
Portal Miranda inquired about the monitoring of arboviruses, the hospital’s structural condition, and the operation of services. Such as neonatology and the emergency room, among other topics. Sara Liz Ricardo, deputy director of critical care, emphasized achievements such as pacemaker replacement. The academic training of new generations, and the reduction in the infant mortality rate.
This visit also commemorated Latin American Medicine Day, dedicated annually to remembering the contributions of Carlos J. Finlay in the study of epidemics and the discovery of the yellow fever vector, and to recognizing outstanding figures in the field.
Accompanying the Minister were Arelis Marrero Guerrero, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (CCPCC) and Deputy Head of the Department of Social Sector Services. Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the CCPCC and First Secretary in Holguin; and other political and governmental authorities.
