The Lucía Hospital, 27 Years as a Reward for the People of Holguin

November 28th holds special significance for those born in this northeastern región. As it marks the beginning of the history of the Lucía Iñiguez Landin Clinical Surgical Hospital in 1998. “…As a reward and incentive for the people of Holguin…” as Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz stated during its inauguration.

For more than a quarter of a century, the staff of this center has contributed through their daily work. To improving the health of the adult population of this region and much of eastern Cuba. Through hard work and dedication, they have earned a prominent place in the development of clinical, surgical, and diagnostic techniques and procedures.

The institution has shaped the lives of countless people who have dedicated decades of work to it. Such as Dr. Gisela Ramírez Ramírez, an internal medicine specialist and founder. “In life, there are events that leave a mark on us and fill us with pride. Like the birth of our children, their growth, graduating, following our calling, and all of this makes us better people.

That’s what working here since the hospital opened has been like for me. It has been an opportunity for professional growth. In this hospital, I have worked tirelessly every day. Contributing my part to the health of the community. I have treated thousands of patients and worked throughout the organization of medical services.”

“I feel honored and proud that life has allowed me to witness the growth in all areas of this healthcare giant. The development of its services, the introduction of new technologies, the training of its professionals, and seeing how each of our colleagues started young and now we’re all gray-haired. We continue to instill humanity and solidarity. That’s why I say it has been a great privilege and an enormous satisfaction to be part of this great team for these 27 years.

Among the highlights of this journey are the incorporation of procedures. Such as functional surgery for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and minimally invasive surgery.

The Lucía Hospital has gained recognition in various transplant modalities. Including kidney transplantation, establishing itself as one of the best of its kind in the country. Cornea transplantation; and bone marrow transplantation. Furthermore, the exceptional character of the medical and support staff who work there sets it apart.

This is confirmed by Dr. Yoanne Graña Mir, an intermediate care specialist: “Since graduating as an intensivist, I’ve worked here. My postgraduate studies were at this hospital. I owe all my experience as an intensivist to it. During that time, I’ve been an intensivist, head of department, and deputy director of the hospital.

Every wall of this hospital reminds me of all the difficult moments we’ve experienced during epidemics and crises, and of the colleagues who work alongside me. We are a family, and that’s why I believe we should all celebrate this 27th anniversary together, because we’ve come this far united.”

The Lucía Hospital was founded with advanced technology. Including a Computed Tomography scanner, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and a multislice CT scanner. The Neurosurgery specialty has also developed at this center with a highly qualified staff.

The Ophthalmology Center has also maintained a constant focus on serving its patients. Even though there are real shortages of various resources. This hasn’t prevented the hospital from addressing, attending to, and resolving the urgent and emergency situations it encounters. Younger generations are joining this effort to ensure the continuity of a project destined to endure.

The young Dr. Froilan Mariño Fernández, head of the Intensive Care Unit, explains that he has been training at the hospital for three years as a resident and one year as a specialist. “I have many experiences, and I believe that being a doctor is a vocation. I take this opportunity to congratulate all those heroes in white coats we have in the emergency rooms, facing difficult challenges.

I think it’s fitting on this new anniversary of the hospital to congratulate all the healthcare personnel who are working today. We have many sick people, and we continue to give our all to try to overcome the arboviral epidemic without having to mourn any human lives, which I believe is the most important thing.”

This anniversary is a cause for celebration for those who, by choice, chance, or the whims of fate, have passed through or remain there with the firm purpose of restoring health, saving lives, sowing tranquility, and, amidst complex situations and numerous limitations, continuing to assist those who need it.
