Russia Calls for Preserving Peace in Latin America

Russia’s ambassador to Panama, Konstantin Gavrilov, asserted that his country supports the declaration of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace. Signed in 2014 at CELAC, it was revealed this Thursday.

In statements to the Spanish digital media outlet Otralectura, the diplomat described as absurd the pretext chosen by Washington. To escalate tensions in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific.

“If the United States truly wants to eradicate the root causes of drug trafficking. It would be more logical to start looking for them in its own country,” he emphasized.

In the interview with the outlet’s director, Koldo Salazar, Moscow’s representative in the isthmus considered that the attacks carried out by the Southern Command against civilian vessels on the high seas. Which have already left more than 80 people dead. Without any evidence being publicly presented, violate a wide range of international norms.

In that regard, he mentioned several articles of the UN Charter. The OAS Charter, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the UN Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.

Gavrilov quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who stated that “this is not how countries that abide by the law act. But rather those that believe themselves to be above the law.”

He added that a frontal fight against drug trafficking is indeed necessary. Also but it must always be carried out in close collaboration with all actors involved. Especially the governments of the region, with strict adherence to international law.

Furthermore, he asserted that no one in their right mind could believe that the world’s largest aircraft Carrier. A nuclear submarine, and several destroyers from the Navy arrived in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific solely to sink fishing boats associated with drug trafficking.

The regional militarization undertaken by Washington is advancing at an accelerated pace, he stated. Citing as an example the deployment of US troops in Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and Panama. Where they are conducting joint exercises in the context of a potential “ground invasion” of Venezuela.

Gavrilov rejected the belligerent statements from the White House and the Pentagon. Their direct and indirect threats to bomb the infrastructure of legitimate governments, labeling them “criminal organizations” and “terrorists.” Which sets a very dangerous precedent for the entire international community.

Russia strongly insists on the inviolability of Venezuela’s sovereignty and full political independence, he emphasized.

In response to several promising calls for dialogue, he affirmed that his country will fully support any diplomatic initiative that seeks to preserve the status quo of Latin America and the Caribbean as a “Zone of Peace.”

Regarding current ties with Latin America, he quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying that “Moscow does not seek friendships against anyone. But rather prefers to build alliances in favor of something.” Guided by this spirit, he said, we join forces with our partners in the region to implement projects that will result in tangible benefits for the comprehensive development of all parties involved.
