In Cuba and today’s world, where digital immediacy and information overload are the norm. Communication has ceased to be a simple act and has become a survival skill, an art, and, above all, a civic responsibility.
As journalists, we are firsthand witnesses of how information flows (or stagnates) and how it shapes our reality.
Understanding the Process: More than Saying, It’s Connecting
The communication process, in essence, remains unchanged. A sender encodes a message that travels through a channel (a newspaper, a radio station, a social network) to a receiver, who decodes it. The key, however, lies not only in the transmission, but in the context and, fundamentally, in the feedback.
In our reality, this circuit is more complicated. Today’s receiver is not passive. They are prosumers who generate their own content and are often instant senders. This, magnified by digital platforms and the need to verify the truth amidst the noise. It makes noise, ironically, the main barrier.
Three Pillars for Effective Communication
To successfully navigate this complex environment, whether in the public or personal sphere. It is vital to apply some basic principles.
- Clarity and Conciseness: In a context of limited connectivity or fleeting attention span, ambiguity is the enemy. A clear, direct message, free of unnecessary detours, is more likely to be correctly received and understood. Get to the point.
- Active Listening and Empathy: Communication is not a monologue. It is crucial to listen, not only to what is said, but also to what is left unsaid. In journalism, this means going beyond the official story. Seeking out the diverse voices of the community, and understanding their concerns. On a societal level, it involves listening to understand, not just to respond.
- Verification and Ethics: In the age of misinformation (fake news), responsible communication is based on truth and honesty. Before transmitting or sharing, every citizen must adopt the journalistic maxim of verifying sources. Ethics becomes the indispensable filter against manipulation and rumors.
The importance in today’s Holguin
Why is this so vital now? Communication is the engine of citizen participation. In our society, effective, transparent, and two-way communication between institutions. The media, and the population is essential for building trust, mobilizing efforts, and addressing collective problems.
When information flows honestly and feedback channels work. Also people feel valued and actively participate in the search for solutions. Whether productive, social, or economic.
Conversely, a lack of communication or opacity creates gaps that are quickly filled by speculation and discontent. In a time of challenge, communication must be a bridge, not a wall.
Adopting more conscious, clear, and ethical communication is not just a good practice. It is an urgent need to strengthen the social fabric and move forward as a community.
Let’s make respectful dialogue and verified information the foundation of our daily lives. Change always begins with what we choose to say. Above all, with the intention with which we say it.
