Cuba Honors Fallen at Supertanker Base

With a roll call, a minute of silence, and roses in honor of the 17 fallen, the province of Matanzas honored the victims of the Supertanker Base fire three years after the fateful event.

The headquarters of the Military Region in western Cuba marked the beginning of the tributes to those who lost their lives in one of the largest fires in the history of Cuba.

At the Enrique Estrada Fire Station Museum, located in the center of Matanzas, family members, friends, and people linked in one way or another to the disaster gathered to express their feelings on a date that still sheds pain on the city.

With the inauguration of the photographic exhibition Memories of Fire, which compiles snapshots taken by the Matanzas press during those gray days of August 2022. Those present at the Museum recalled the struggle of all of Matanzas for the ceasefire at Supertanker Base.

As has been the case for three years, the San Carlos Borromeo Cemetery in Matanzas once again served as a space for floral tributes on behalf of the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and Army General Raúl Castro.

Matanzas has not forgotten that afternoon of August 5th, 2022, which marked immense days of anguish. While the courage of those present before the flames kept awake a nation that will forever remember the heroism of what they experienced.
