Cuba Reiterates Commitment to Population Protection Policies

The Cuban government today reiterated its commitment to social protection policies, family care, and the aging population. On the occasion of World Population Day, Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister of Cuba, highlighted at the 10th meeting the priority the country places on addressing demographic dynamics. Aware that people are the main resource for achieving economic and social goals.

Cuba ended the year 2024 with a population of 9,748,007; 307,961 fewer than in 2023. With 25.7% of the population aged 60 and over, the country leads the list of the oldest in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed at the 10th meeting the importance the nation places on sustainable development, gender equality, and ensuring the right to health for all. World Population Day has been celebrated since 1990 at the initiative of the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Its main objective is to raise awareness of all the issues currently affecting the world’s population. Especially those related to the growth and development of nations.

This year, the United Nations commemorates the day under the slogan “Empowering youth to form the families they want in a just and hopeful world.” To focus on ensuring that young people have the rights, resources, and opportunities to decide their own future.

According to the latest World Population Review study, the current world population is 8,005,176,000 people, with the most populous countries being India, China, the United States, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
