The professionals at the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (Cirah), the only entity in the province of Holguin for science and technological innovation. Received an inspection team from the State Center for Control of Medicines, Equipment, and Medical Devices (CECMED) as part of the certification process in good clinical practices.
According to Dr. Zaimar Rodríguez Feria, head of the provincial group for Clinical Trials in the area, ‘the inspection team from CECMED started at Cirah. Where they verified the clinical trial consultation, the product administration site, and the functioning of the ethics committee for research.
In the important process, the director of Cirah, Doctor in Science Jacqueline Medrano Montero, gave a presentation on the history and achievements of the center. Which, over 25 years of uninterrupted work, has achieved remarkable results. Including accumulating more than 15 years of experience in the Neurorehabilitation Program, the only therapy capable of slowing the progression of hereditary ataxias.
The evaluating team of experts from CECMED was composed of Doctor in Science Diadelis Remírez Figueredo, Inspector of the Cuban regulatory authority, along with Yumara Díaz Castro and Yanet Chapi Estévez.
This tour also included the Cirah itself, the laboratory area, pharmacy, and the quality management system of the Lucía Íñiguez Landín Clinical Surgical Hospital, the healthcare institution to which Cirah is subordinated. On this particular matter, Doctor Rodríguez Feria added that support services for Cirah (pharmacy and laboratory)
In the meeting held, it was highlighted that the laboratory is among the few places in the country that works in accordance with Regulation D 03-21, the most recent one. While not all locations in the country have implemented it, this laboratory does, with adequate and properly developed standardized work procedures. Hence, traceability has been verified.
In the conclusions, they reiterated their satisfaction with the visited locations and confirmed that the Cirah and the support services of Hospital Lucía were certified. This is a huge achievement for the province and is worth highlighting in all forums, they concluded. In this way, Cirah became the fourth site in the country to obtain this status, alongside two in Havana and one in Cienfuegos.
Most of the treatments applied in this institution are oriented towards thematic lines that seek to delay the degenerative course of the condition and provide guidance to the families of patients and carriers of the dominant autosomal gene.
It also stands out in the training of specialized medical and technical personnel and for socializing its results through publications in high-impact journals.
CECMED is the regulatory body for pharmaceutical products, medical equipment, and devices in the Republic of Cuba, which ensures that each pharmaceutical product or medical equipment meets the required safety and efficacy, hence its work to accredit its efficiency, quality, and reliability.
