The province of Holguin consolidates its strategy to change the energy matrix through the implementation of projects that promote the use of renewable energy sources. In line with the national objectives and the international commitments of sustainable development.
This effort includes FORMER, aimed at Strengthening the Leadership and Participation of Women in the Renewable Energy Sector FORMER. The result of collaboration between the governments of Cuba and Canada, and aims to contribute to improving the living conditions of vulnerable communities and their households, where women are heads of households.
In recent declarations Fernando Hechavarría Pupo, director of Renewable Energy Sources at Empresa Eléctrica Holguin, said that 502 Autonomous Photovoltaic Systems of 1 and 2 kW will be installed. This equipment benefits users and communities dependent on generators.
So far, 118 have been installed with direct impact on more than 500 families in areas such as Punta Alegre (Antilla), Tinajita (Banes) and Arroyo Blanco (Mayari).
In addition, 87 solar heaters were imported for installation in the municipality of Moa, the Pediatric Hospital Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja de Holguin, educational centers, children’s circles, maternity homes, homes for the elderly and other health institutions such as polyclinics.
Another of the initiatives referred by the specialist was the South-South Climate Cooperation Project or LEMI as it is also known, of national scope, which includes the installation of 450 photovoltaic systems in the Holguin territory. As part of this task, the installation of 196 solar panels was completed and benefited residents in intricate or difficult to access places, not connected to the National Electro-energetic System.
Progress in the transformation of Holguin’s energy matrix reflects a comprehensive commitment to sustainability. Projects such as FORMER and LEMI not only materialize the transition to renewable sources, but also strengthen collaboration between local governments, institutions and communities, prioritizing energy efficiency and emissions reduction.
With a view to 2030, Holguin consolidates an inclusive and resilient energy model, where every action contributes to a future where access to clean energy is synonymous with human and environmental development.
