Protection of the ozone layer promoted in Holguin

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in the province of Holguin implements a broad agenda for the protection of the ozone layer, which includes the reduction of refrigerant gases and ecological education.

Norkis Ochoa Aguilera, head of the Department of Environmental Instruments and Policy and specialist in this program, told ACN that since 2020 some 29 entities have received the National Award Free of Ozone Depleting Substances (SA0), including industries and hotels.

He specified that 76 companies have also signed the voluntary declaration for the reduction of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and the elimination of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), where the use of science and technological innovation is integrated with environmentally friendly practices.

The expert stressed that within these projects there are ecological education activities with children and young people of different levels of education, who participate in environmental sanitation days, planting trees, collecting raw materials, children’s contests, among other actions.

Likewise, the state and nonstate sectors are trained through courses on good refrigeration practices, taught at the Technological Institute of Holguin, aimed at raising the conservation culture of the environment of technicians, workers and managers in this activity.

In 2025, the ozone layer protection program in Cuba celebrates its 30th anniversary and the province is immersed in updating the inventory of equipment containing HFCs and HCFCs and their substitution alternatives in accordance with current international standards.

The Caribbean island is one of the signatory countries of the Montreal Protocol, approved on September 16, 1987 in that Canadian city, with the aim of promoting the gradual substitution of chemical and industrial products harmful to nature.
