A publication of the newspaper Trabajadores highlights that the Holguin working movement has responded to the country’s call to help the victims in Guantanamo after the devastating passage of tropical storm Oscar through four of its municipalities.
Yanara Guerrero Batista, member of the Provincial Secretariat of the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba (CTC), emphasizes that during the week “from the 15 unions and the 14 municipalities the expected solidary, altruistic response, full of love and detachment of the majority of the workers has been received”.
According to the workers, the donations have mainly consisted of clothes, shoes for children and senior citizens, construction tools, household supplies, durable food, school uniforms, school supplies, toys and sanitation products.
According to Batista Guerrero, it has been a movement that has shown the sensitivity of the workers, since the photos that have multiplied in the networks from different staffs do not lie.
Workers from education, tourism, the food industry, public administration, transportation, health, energy and mining, agriculture, culture and other sectors have joined forces to gather the necessary suitcases for the victims in Guantanamo, Cuba’s easternmost province, says the press release.
Likewise, according to Oliday Frias Vega, head of the Union of the Food and Fishing Industry there, a ton of powdered milk was taken to Guantanamo by the entity Pesca Caribe Holguin.
According to the publication, solidarity has also come from self-employed workers and new economic actors, who have destined part of their productions to the common objective of alleviating the needs of the inhabitants of Imías, San Antonio del Sur, Maisí and Baracoa.
Numerous monetary contributions have also been recorded, among them the one made by the collective of the Gran Muthu Almirante Beach Hotel, amounting to 100 thousand pesos.
