In addition to the traditional research work that the group carries out to improve the operation of the “Pedro Sotto Alba” and “Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara” nickel production plants, a project is being carried out there that will have an impact on the production of construction materials.
According to Ester Rodríguez Castillo, director of Cediniq, it is a work of experimentation with kaolinitic clay to turn it into a cement extender and to allow the realization of different construction works, whose initial idea came from the University of Moa “Dr. Antonio Núñez Jiménez”.

The project, which is advancing in the kiln of Cediniq’s pilot plant, involves, in addition to the academic institution mentioned, the UEB Prefabricado y Premezclado company and the local government, with the unitary purpose of favoring, above all, the construction of houses.
In this regard, Róger Samuel Almenares Reyes, PhD in Sciences, vice-rector of formation of the University of Moa and leader of the research, pointed out that the future extender requires for its preparation, in addition to calcined clay, limestone and gypsum.

He also emphasized that it can replace between 30 and 50 percent of the ordinary Portland cement, which will obviously allow a wide economic saving without diminishing the potential of the mentioned cement.
He also explained that the work will soon bear its fruits: some 60 tons are in the process of being manufactured at Cediniq and will be used mainly for different applications within the construction of houses.
