Holguín Polytechnic contributes to educational economy

The mechanized sugar cane cutting and hauling platoon belonging to the Manuel Isla Perez polytechnic school in Holguin province contributes to the generation of income of the sector and the locality by means of the production linkage between the institution and the Cristino Naranjo sugar mill.

Located in the municipality of Cacocum, this educational project was the first of its kind to be set up in the country during the 1989-1990 school year with the objective of familiarizing the students of the medium technician specialty in Agricultural Mechanization with the tasks in which they would work after graduating, explained to ACN Dixan Mojena, municipal director of Education.

This led to the strengthening of ties with the AZCUBA Company, which made it possible for the institution to be one of the pioneers in the territory in the application of the Production Teaching Strategy, which establishes the responsibility of the entities in the comprehensive training of the qualified work force and the economic contribution to the institution, he said.

So far this year, this group has collected more than 250,000 pesos with the cutting of more than 2,60,000 arrobas of sugar cane, although it has a higher record in previous years, income that also benefits the polytechnic and the teachers and students involved in the work, he said.

Although an important vocational training and professional orientation work is carried out from the initial courses, the insertion of the students in the harvest takes place from the third year, during the pre-professional practices, which helps to complement the theoretical knowledge learned, among them those related to the handling of the machinery, he added.

The director also commented that the early approach of the students to what will be their trade, not only allows them to adapt to the work routine, but also fosters in them values such as responsibility and love for the profession, the latter vital for the economic development of the municipality, which is eminently agricultural and sugar-producing.

Since its foundation, more than 30 years ago, this teaching platoon has been integrated by around three thousand students of Technical and Professional Education, who have cut more than 60 million tons of arrobas and have obtained awards such as the Millionaire Flag, given by the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
