Holguin: Medical attention guaranteed in rural communities

The province of Holguin guarantees medical care in rural and hard to reach communities, based on a comprehensive program in those localities, which prioritizes vulnerable populations.

In municipalities such as Cacocum, with three large rural areas, actions are implemented to ensure the vitality of the sector, in spite of the material shortages caused by the hardening of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba.

Dr. Lisbeth Leyva Pantoja, a first-degree specialist and Director of Health in that municipality, told the ACN that they have areas like La Tania, Altagracia and La Güira de Pesquero, which are far from the municipal head town, where actions are broadly followed up.

She emphasized that in those neighborhoods there is a doctor’s offices with a doctor and nurse where they provide medical care first hand, follow-up to the inhabitants, evaluation of vulnerable population groups and timely diagnosis of emergencies.

In addition, there are established procedures for transferring patients to Rubén Batista polyclinic or to one of the provincial hospitals, depending on the characteristics of each case, she said.

In areas vulnerable to heavy rains and meteorological events, Public Health carries out vaccination campaigns, health promotion activities, training of new professionals, among other actions.

Holguín has more than 20 rural communities benefiting from activities that contribute to improving the quality of life of their inhabitants and satisfying the demands of professional improvement, especially among adolescents and young people.

Before the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, there were only 5,000 doctors in Cuba, and there were no medical programs in the country in those hard to reach places.

This was one of the first projects to be promoted since early days of the Revolution and is still in place today, and have been extended with the opening of maternity homes and hospitals in the mountains.
