Cuba is facing a complex scenario related to its drinking water supply system, marked by breakdown of important equipments, authorities in the sector said on Tuesday.
More than 600,000 people in Cuba are affected by is supply, acknowledged José Antonio Hernández Álvarez, president of the Water and Sanitation Business Group, part of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, when he explained to the press the complex panorama of the supply of this vital liquid.
Hernandez Álvarez told reporters in Havana that the problems of the supply system stem from irregularities in the power system, because some circuit protection devices go off at times with an impact on the operations of the supply equipments.
The breakdown of water supply stations has affected over 600 thousand citizens largely concentrated in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, Havana, Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, Holguin, Santiago and Granma.
Hernandez said that work in underway to solve the problems, despite the existence of a large number of inoperative equipment. He announced the arrival of important resources which will help relieve the current tense situation of the supply of such vital resource.
It is acknowledged that the devices in the northeastern Cuban province of Holguin, despite repairs, continue with interruptions and specialists are reviewing the causes.
It is true that Holguín is among the Cuban provinces most affected by complex water supply situation, specially its capital city.
The supply system of the city of Holguin maintains a complex situation in two of the networks with deficit in the Northern part due to equipment breakage, at the time it also hits the Easter zone due to low levels of Gibara dam.
In the case of the Northern area, it is paralyzed, affecting 81,453 people with a cycle that exceeds 70 days with lack of supply. To fix the breakage, a joint work was carried out with the “Héroes del 26 de Julio” factory and the Empresa Aprovechamiento de las Aguas, of Santiago de Cuba province with excellent technology to start up the pump, but on the third day of the execution, the shaft broke. In record time another one was manufactured, but it presented problems 24 hours after it was installed.
