Fidel Castro’s 98th birthday celebrated in Biran, his homeland

Hundreds of young people from Holguin celebrated today the 98th anniversary of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, in the town of Biran, Cueto municipality, where he was born in 1926.

The tribute ceremony was attended by members of the Young Communist League (UJC), workers and neighbors of the community who, in the vicinity of the house where he was born, approached the roots of the eminent thinker and celebrated, as every year, the International Youth Day (August 12).

Elisbel Durán Borroto, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the UJC, thanked all those who at an early age fought and defended the freedom of the country, where Fidel, who dedicated his life to the construction of a better future for the new generations of the country, stood out.

This close bond of the rebel icon with those he considered continuators of the independence and revolutionary deeds, is what makes that every year, on this date, he is honored for his confidence in the new generations to maintain the conquests achieved, he added.

The moment was appropriate to constitute the Provincial Commission that will be in charge of the preparations to celebrate Fidel’s centenary, to incorporate new members to the organization and to highlight the performance of those in tasks for social welfare.

The celebration was also attended by Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary in the province, governor of the province Manuel Francisco Hernández Aguilera, and other government authorities and members of political and mass organizations.

Fidel Castro Ruz, leader of the Moncada heroic deed, author of the self-defense plea History will Acquit Me, rebel of the Granma yacht expedition and the Sierra Maestra feat, Commander in Chief, was born on August 13, 1926 in what is currently the historical complex of Biran, in the northeastern Cuban province of Holguin.
