The film La mujer salvaje (The Wild Woman) wins again, after winning the Lucia Award for best fiction feature film at the Gibara International Film Festival, which ended in that city in the province of Holguin.
The closing ceremony took place at the Jibá Cinema, where in addition to the 2023 film by Alán González, Lapso (Brazil, 2023), by Caroline Cavalcanti, also deserved the award for best short fiction film.
Meanwhile, Tommaso Santambrogio’s The Oceans Are the Real Continents (Cuba-Italy, 2023), previously crowned as best fiction feature film with the collateral award of the Cuban Film Press Association, received a special award.
Special mention went to Si alguna vez (Cuba, 2023), by Annia Quesada Milord; Sin papeles (Canada, 2023), by Christian de la Cortina; and Saudade (Cuba-Portugal, 2023), by Sandra Ramy, Sandra Lopes, Inti Herrera and X Alfonso.
The Documentary and Animation Jury awarded the prize for best documentary to Un hogar sin armario (Spain-Argentina, 2023), by Eduardo Cubillo; while the award for best animation went to Amapolas en mi ventana (Colombia, 2023), by Grettel Melissa Quintana. Jíbaro (Documentary short film, Cuba, 2023), by Osmanys Sánchez Arañó; Assum Preto, un grito desde el margen (Documentary short film, Brazil, 2023), by Cícero Fraga; and Techo de cristal (Animated short film, Argentina, 2022), by Liliana Romero, also received a mention.
This year, Gibara International Film Festival resumed Films in Progress, which awarded Boxeo Habana Social Club (Documentary Feature in Development, Italy-Spain-Cuba), by Cristiano Regina.
The film will receive support for translation, subtitling, delivery, promotion at international festivals and distribution by Magale.
In addition, El día del cobro (Fiction short film in development, Cuba), by Luis Lago; and Reportaje (Fiction feature film in development, Mexico), by Nicolás Gutiérrez Wenhammar, also received mention.
The first of these proposals will also receive support for translation, subtitling, delivery, promotion at international festivals and distribution arrangements from Magale, while the second will receive editing assistance from Estudios Churubusco SA.
Festival director Sergio Benvenuto announced that as of 2025 the event will be called Gibara International Low Budget Film Festival, in accordance with the foundational bases set forth by Humberto Solás, its founder, in the Manifesto of Cine Pobre. In addition, it will be held again in April, as in the first editions.
