Studies of archaeological collections carried out in Holguin

Holguin develops studies of archaeological collections as part of the programs of conservation of the aboriginal culture in this Cuban geographic zone.

These materials come from diggings carried out by the specialists of this institution with more than 40 years of foundation and attached to the Center of Research and Environmental Services in this city.

Lourdes del Rosario Pérez Iglesias, a specialist from the Eastern Center of Archeology, based in the province, told ACN that among the objects under investigation are findings from the sites of El Júcaro, El Porvenir and Esterito, in the north of the province, where ornaments and ceramic pieces stand out.

He indicated that the recent searches offer a new vision of those collections for their cataloguing and the conservation strategies of the customs and traditions of the first settlers of the Greater Antilles.

Also in the entity are made clay reproductions of idols and ornaments, marketed in events, which allow to socialize these riches especially in adolescents and young people, said the expert.

She pointed out that new research is being promoted in the area of Cacoyugüín, in the municipality of Gibara, where a site of scientific value is currently being studied.

The Central Eastern Department of Archeology also dedicates its work to the analysis of the pre-Columbian cultures through projects, which in the last five years, have allowed to identify the traces of the Indo-Hispanic contact in terms of ornaments, utilitarian objects, among other areas.

Holguin constitutes one of the referential regions for the study of archeology and in the area some of the most important discoveries of the insular Caribbean have been made such as the Chorro de Maíta Cemetery, located in Banes, recognized as one of the most important in the geographic region.
