
Alejandro Sanchez, from Holguín province, grabbed crown this Thursday of the National Chess Championship, Pioneer category, held at the EIDE Pedro Diaz Coello sports school in the called Cuban City of the Parks.
Sanchez, first pre-qualified of the event with 1,1917 ELO points, finished with 8.0 units out of a possible nine, and in the last round he beat Helder Avila (Matanzas).
His closest pursuer was Andy Hernandez (7.0), the only one capable of tipping the king of Holguin, and in third place was Erick Ravelo (6.0) from Guantanamo (6.0).
The representative of Holguin to reach the title linked six victories after his setback against Andy and got an increase of 54 units for his ELO which is 1,917 points.
In the school team competition, the representation of Villa Clara dominated, with a perfect performance in the nine outings and a score of 32 units, second place went to Havana (25.5) and third place to Camagüey (24.5). The players from our province were fifth with 18.5.
Individually, the child Esley Diaz on the second board and the female Lorena Montejo on the fourth table, both from Villaclare, who managed to tilt the king of their rivals in the nine games, stood out. His teammate Jinela Rodriguez (8.5) won on the third board.
Felipe Herrera from Camagüey (8.0 points) was the best among the first boards, here David Calzadilla from Holguín (7.5) was second.
