On the 55th anniversary of the death of Mexican painter Electa Arenal Huerta, who had a wide influence on visual arts and culture in Holguin, a talk on her life and work was held in the small hall of the Provincial Center of Fine Arts.
Moderated by researcher Sucell Salazar, this space, which specially dealt with the artist’s relationship with Holguin, had as protagonists the local sculptor Lauro Hechevarria and specialist Raul Figueredo.
Electa, together with her husband, architect Gustavo Vargas, left a deep mark in the national culture. She was in charge of several works, the best known of which was the completion of the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Hospital in the Cuban City of the Parks.
She opened paths to sculpture and painting. “The sculptural mural Canto a la Revolución was the first project carried out by the Sculpture Workshop created in Holguin by the Mexican artist. The work was submitted to a contest, after which it became the façade of the Puerto Padre Regional Hospital, today Raymundo Castro Morales Pediatric Hospital, a building designed and built by Gustavo Vargas,” the specialists pointed out.
Between 1964 and 1965, the artist worked prolifically in sculpture and painting, creating, among many other works, the pictorial mural “Cuban Revolution”, on the second floor of the Provincial Museum of History La Periquera.
Electa and her husband returned to their native country in 1965, where the artist died in a tragic accident while working on a mural at the Polyforum Cultural Siqueiros, a venue located on Insurgentes Avenue in Mexico City.
