Water supply systems are among the most notable effects of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba on the water resources sector in the province of Holguin.
Juan Mario Hechavarría Hernández, territorial delegate of that front, told ACN that the genocidal policy basically limits the sources of financing and the purchase of raw materials and devices, such as pipes and hydraulic pumps, while multiplying transportation costs.
He pointed out that the modernization of technologies is also affected, due to the impossibility of acquiring inputs with up to 10 percent of components of U.S. origin in their manufacture.
He said that these conditions, intensified in recent years by more than 200 additional measures, negatively affect the execution of new investments and the improvement of infrastructure, which would allow to increase the quality of service and reduce the cycles in some locations where they exceed 20 days.
In contrast, and through the application of science and technological innovation, alternatives are being sought to replace imported parts with others manufactured domestically, while maintaining quality standards, the executive emphasized.
For example, in the pumps of the supply networks, whose operation exceeds 40 years, the gaskets, valves, among other parts, are replaced with local materials resulting from research work by technicians and specialists in the field, he added.
These solutions allow the incorporation of new clients to the aqueduct and sewage systems and the guarantee of supply to rural and hard-to-reach areas, included in the social programs prioritized by the Cuban Revolution.
The negative effect of the blockade on the national economy amounts to some five billion dollars a year and has an impact on health, education, transportation, communications, agriculture, science and technological innovation, among other sectors.
For more than 60 years, the hostile policy limits the direct trade of inputs, spare parts, machinery and other aggregates, manufactured in the United States or with components made by U.S. companies, which forces the Caribbean island to obtain means through third countries, with considerable losses for transportation.
