Flora protection prioritized in Holguín

The localization of new populations of varieties in critical danger of extinction is one of the results of a project for the protection of the endemic flora in the mountains of the province of Holguin, characterized by a wide biodiversity.

These species are identified by their small size and rarity, in addition to their adaptability to specific soil and humidity conditions, which make them highly vulnerable to the development of agriculture, human action and meteorological phenomena.

José Luis Gómez Echavarría, main specialist of the Holguín Botanical Garden, told ACN that this research contributes to a territorial conservation program, which includes not only the environment but also the improvement of the population’s quality of life.

The novelty, said the expert, is that it includes community intervention for more information on the habitat of these genera, almost invisible to human sight because of their appearance, which do not have common names.

The characteristics of wild varieties and reproductive conditions that contribute to natural regeneration and the development of recommendations included in the management plans of protected areas have also been deepened, he explained.

He argued that the updates obtained in the field work are processed in a database for socialization among specialists and the management of vulnerable areas such as the Sierra de Nipe.

In parallel, the city’s Botanical Garden is developing an extensive program aimed at the conservation of flora, both within the facility and in its natural habitat, one of the strategies to preserve the more than 500 species of plants exclusive to this eastern province.
