Hydraulic services benefit vulnerable neighborhoods in Holguín

Attention to vulnerable neighborhoods and confronting drought, marked the achievements of the Hydraulic Resources sector in Holguin, which closed 2023 with eight thousand new clients to the aqueduct and sewage systems.

These results transcended this Tuesday in the annual meeting of this company where they also analyzed on topics of social impact as the cleaning of pits and the mechanized sanitation of dams, rivers and streams.

Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, territorial delegate of the sector, pointed out to the ACN that in the prioritized population settlements more than five kilometers of pipelines were built and through international collaboration projects it was possible to install solar pumps and other options to guarantee greater accessibility.

He emphasized that the simplified sewerage system is being implemented in the neighborhoods as a variant, which allows the evacuation of solid waste from the homes and requires few resources, an experience that is gradually being extended throughout the territory.

He specified that 58 solar pumping stations are also providing services for the benefit of these towns, mainly in isolated and difficult to access areas, one of the social programs prioritized by the Cuban Revolution, despite the lack of equipment and spare parts.

The search for new sources of water supply for the population and the drilling of wells in municipalities like Cueto, Urbano Noris and Cacocum continue in order to mitigate the impact of the intense drought.

Javier Toledo, vice-president of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, emphasized on the optimal use of the State budget and the development of infrastructures, having as a base the quality in the terminations and the use of alternatives aimed at improving in this aspect.

He also highlighted the import substitution program, where an investment was made to manufacture in Cuba the parts used in network connections, which will improve services to the population and contribute to reduce supply cycles.

He also referred to the loss of rigor in repair and maintenance works, which has led to an increase of more than 65 percent in conductor failures, a trend that is currently having a negative impact.

During the event, the companies Servicios Ingenieros Hidráulicos (ESI), Constructora Oriente, Dirección Integrada de Proyectos (DIP) Trasvase and Unidad de Servicios Generales were also recognized for their results in the national program for the development of the sector during 2023.

Holguín also has more than 60 percent of its groundwater and, in parallel, priority is given to the use of idle land for the promotion of food sovereignty and the renewal of the technical advisory council in charge of the implementation of science and technological innovation.
