Marisol, expression of friendship between Chileans and Cubans

When I meet people as special as Chilean Marisol Olivia Molina Silva, I reaffirm Marti’s concept that “Light is a kind of spirit that springs from the sun in the sky and from women on earth”, because this active woman, distinguished for her humanitarian actions and member of the Chilean Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, has shown her love for this Caribbean people, its rich history and culture.

She is also known for her extensive and active path in favor of the Chilean homeland and other just causes, such as Palestine and the battle waged by Cuba against the U.S. blockade and for the withdrawal of the naval base illegally maintained in the territory of Guantanamo.

A member of the Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Chile, Marisol has to put all her physical and mental capacity to the test, to attend to diverse activities, as president of a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) of Human Rights in her region of Los Rios – composed of the provinces of El Rancho and Valdivia -; advisor of Culture and Secretary of the Cultural Center “Canto America” and member of the artistic collective of the House of Memory, in addition to being an early childhood educator.

In her educational work she transmits to the little ones her ideas related to the historical relations between Cuba and Chile and recalls the hugs that Fidel and Allende gave each other, when the Cuban leader visited the South American country in 1971 and the following year, when the beloved Chilean president reciprocated the visit.

Experiences that she shared with university professors and students and students of the Lidia Doce secondary school in the city of Holguin, as well as representatives of the Federation of Cuban Women among other guests, in the conference that she gave at the Icap headquarters, called, “Thanks Cuba”, in which she exposed, among other important topics, her experiences as in charge of the Intercultural Pedagogical Program of the Rodulfo Amando Philippi High School, of the Commune of Paillaco, in the Region of Los Ríos.

Small in stature, but big in heart, vast culture and political development, Marisol manages, with her expressiveness and sympathy, to attract the attention of her interlocutors, as it happened in the Icap delegation, where she referred that, since her youth she felt attracted by the Cuban revolution and that admiration for the history of this heroic people led her to join, in 2013, the Solidarity Movement, through which she has made several visits to our country and unites her beautiful special bonds of friendship with this province of Holguin.

She emphasized that the Chilean Movement of Solidarity with Cuba promotes and develops diverse actions in defense and support to the just Cuban cause, against the criminal blockade imposed, sustained and intensified by the government of the United States, and the exit of the territory illegally occupied by its naval base in Guantanamo, since 121 years ago.

This movement of solidarity with Cuba has collectives, from Arica (North) to Magallanes (South), which came out stronger from a national meeting held last November, in the city of Serena, where new actions and purposes were proposed, including the celebration of the XXVIII National Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, this year, in the city of Valdivia, a province located more than 800 kilometers south of Santiago, the Chilean capital, informed Marisol.

She specified that, among the multiple activities carried out by the Chilean solidarity members -who maintain a permanent dialogue with the embassies of both countries-, there are events, meetings, visits to different groups and the dissemination of these activities, among others related to the reality that Cubans live, counteracting the false news spread abroad.

The ICAP specialist, Iván Fernández Rueda, commented that Cubans feel appreciation for the Chilean people and the gestures of solidarity that the history of these relations reflects, such as the incorporation of brave men like Pedro Vargas Sotomayor, who participated with Antonio Maceo in the invasion from East to West in the wars of independence, reached the rank of Brigadier General and fell in combat in November 1896.

The participants in the meeting also received information on the current political situation in Chile, the historical significance of the coup d’état that cost the life of the legitimate president Salvador Allende, on September 11, 1973; the referendums held to determine whether the citizens agreed with the constitutional proposals; and the Mapuche issue (the most numerous indigenous people in Chile and Argentina), which is becoming more complex, because they live in the greatest poverty, marginalized and whose lands continue to be usurped with total impunity.

At the end of the conference, before an audience that maintained its interest in the topics addressed, Marisol pointed out that “Thank you Cuba” is a title that honors all that this people has done and does, in terms of solidarity, with various countries in the world, including the provision of services, as well as the training of doctors and other professionals.

The fact is that the six thousand kilometers that separate Chile from Cuba are shortened by the solidarity and history that unite both peoples, as recognized by Marisol, whose name is a combination of María (chosen of God) and Sol (the one that shines), resident in the region of Los Ríos, surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, in a country bathed by the Pacific Sea.
