A multidisciplinary team of the Pediatric Hospital Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja in the province of Holguin today successfully removed a mechanical pencil cap from the right main bronchus of a 12-year-old adolescent.
Hand, cap, surgery
On this occasion, a rigid bronchoscopy was performed, a procedure that consists of introducing, via endoscopy, a tube through the patient’s mouth under anesthesia, without intubation, and which allows reaching the trachea through the larynx and observing both bronchi, said Dr. Alberto Ibarra Batista, specialist in Otorhinolaryngology, in an exclusive statement to ACN.
The operation lasted approximately 20 minutes and with the help of tweezers the foreign body accidentally ingested by the patient, from the metallurgical mining municipality of Moa, was removed, explained the expert.
He pointed out that the bronchoscopy passed without complications and no lesions were found at the level of the bronchial tree, which was possible because the casing had holes and could ventilate, so the patient is evolving favorably after the intervention.

The specialist also spoke about the importance of keeping little children away from items that could pose a danger of ingestion or aspiration and, for older children, to explain the risks of playing inappropriately with objects in their mouths.
This case constitutes the first surgery for a bronchial foreign body in the current year and during 2023, specialists of the Holguin pediatric hospital treated several children with ingestion of nails, beans and corn grains with favorable evolution of the patients.
