According to Dr. Roberto Hidalgo Pupo, first degree specialist in Cardiology and head of that service in the pediatric institution, basic measurements such as weight and height were taken in these patients.

In addition, their blood pressure was measured and an oximeter test was performed to determine the amount of oxygen in the blood of the seven children who came for consultation.

“We performed an electrocardiogram, followed by a transthoracic Doppler echocardiogram where we evaluated both cardiovascular structure and function. Finally, we performed a flow-mediated vasodilation test, which explores the distensibility of the brachial artery, and the result is whether the patient has endothelial dysfunction.

Although this condition has no expression at this age, it has been validated as a predictive test for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and for all those diseases in which the vascular endothelium is involved,” he added.

Parents and relatives of these patients expressed their gratitude to the different health professionals who have integrated this sensitive and humane project.

Yadira Gonzalez, mother of Ernesto Llorente Gonzalez, said: “I think it is a great opportunity to belong to the Coral Skin Community and it is very good for all the children to have this cardiovascular genetic study”.

Similarly, Ibis Torres, mother of Ernesto Alejandro Esteban Torres said she was very grateful for the participation and effort of all the health personnel and collaborators who are helping to carry out these studies to prevent and promote activities for the children’s health. “We can contribute to avoid diseases that may arise in the future and help them with their diet”.

In addition, she extended her gratitude to all the health personnel who have supported the community’s activities to help all the people with the condition of albinism.

According to Iliana Pupo Herrera, one of the creators and coordinator of the Holguin branch of the CPAC, the conclusive results of this study will be made known later and, as part of it, it is intended to reach all the patients in pediatric ages in the provinces of Holguin and Las Tunas.

Also present at this activity was the national vice-president of the Community of Albino People of Cuba CPAC, Yanet Ochoa Sanchez.

Currently this community in Holguin also participates in the development of a national campaign for the screening of skin cancer, which is a way to reach the totality of carriers of this condition in Cuba’s records, even those who do not present lesions in this organ. Created in March 2023 in Holguin, the Community of Albino People of Cuba, welcomes more than 200 people with this genetic disorder, which worldwide reaches a prevalence of one case per 17 thousand people.
