The workers from Guatemala agricultural and livestock company, which manages the 21.1 hectares of the central pivot irrigation machine no. 2 of the Toma 3 production farm -in Juan Vicente-, will harvest in the coming months about one hundred tons of sweet potatoes and cassava, that is, about 220 thousand pounds of vegetables that will be available, among other commitments, to the more than 120 thousand inhabitants of the municipality of Mayarí, in Holguín province.
Toma 3 production farm is one of the four in which the Guatemala company has multiplied its irrigation machines and other rainfed areas that are cultivated by rural workers, land usufructuaries and even companies whose main social purpose is far from agriculture, such as the Engineering Works Construction Company No. 16 (ECOIG-16) and the Felton thermoelectric power plant.
The latter, like others, have joined the strategy of the Holguin authorities to grant to emblematic companies and industries of the province -for self-consumption of their workers, their families and the population-, part of the fertile lands that are at the foot of the mountains of Mayari.
They are fertile valleys blessed by the waters of that marvel of Cuban engineering of the 21st century that is the East-West Water Transfer, where the substantial investments made in these areas for food production are progressively being put to good use.
The East-West Water Transfer is gradually consolidated and lands that before were unproductive now begin to give food for the national balance, for the city of Holguin and for Mayari and the communities settled in its surroundings.
Realities and potentialities that were pondered by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, who together with the member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee, Roberto Morales Ojeda, gave continuity this Friday morning to the exchanges of the country’s leadership with officials and other leaders of the municipal committees of the Party and administration authorities, on the priorities of the country and the organization for 2024.
Holguín is the twelfth territory to receive this type of visit, which throughout January has allowed to interact, in streets, parks and corners with thousands of Cubans, always marked by the firm will to turn the exceptions, the successful experiences in the economic and social, in the rule, in the daily life.
According to Yordanis Pérez Urrutia, general director of Empresa Agropecuaria Guatemala, in Mayarí, the Toma 3 production farm, in the town of Juan Vicente, has 242.8 hectares of land, 105.8 of which are irrigated by five electric central pivot machines. According to projects, 1,095 tons of vegetables, 166 tons of greens, 177 tons of grains and 60 tons of fruit are expected to be produced here this year.
“This is the way”, reflected Díaz-Canel with the farmers, who highlighted how here, as in many other places in the country, as he himself has been verifying throughout this month, it has been possible to obtain excellent results.
In spite of the fact that we are going through a complex moment, he pointed out, lands that were not sown before have been put into production here and that can provide a lot of food for the inhabitants of Mayarí, Holguín and the country.
Another example of how much can be done if there are well thought-out strategies, will, commitment and work, a lot of work, Díaz-Canel always insists, is in Heroes de Mayarí General Teaching Hospital, where the leaders of the nation also arrived, accompanied by the first secretary of the PCC provincial committee in Holguín, Ernesto Santiesteban, and governor Manuel Aguilera.
With 240 beds, 18 services and specialties and a staff of more than 700 workers, the hospital covers a population of more than 123,000 people. Dr. Adianne La O, its director, reported, for example, that in 2023 the hospital reported 357 births, and did so with zero infant mortality and zero maternal mortality.
Special thanks were given by the hospital workers to the country’s management for the salary benefits granted to the Health sector, both for seniority, night work and other tasks.
More than 440 workers of the Mártires de Mayarí hospital will benefit from these policies.
At Héroes de Mayarí Hospital, the President of the Republic learned about the increase in the number of consultations and the quality of service to a population of more than 123 thousand people.
A testimony of the gratitude for what is being done here was corroborated by Díaz-Canel and Morales Ojeda at the exit of the center, where dozens of people, some who were at the bus stop and others who were leaving or entering the hospital, went to greet the President and to express their affection and full support to the leadership of the country for the constant effort they are making for the good of the people.
In addition to managing an irrigation machine that covers more than 19 hectares in the Toma 3 production farm, the construction company of engineering works No. 16 (ECOIG-16), specialized in dams and canals, extends its social responsibility throughout the municipality of Mayarí, with the care of the elderly, families in vulnerable situations, social centers and others.
In the entity there was only one demand for a children day care center, but at the headquarters of the emblematic company, better known as Castor, a casita infantil (children care house) was opened to provide shelter to 30 children of the mothers of the community, mainly from the Health and Education sectors
Díaz-Canel and Morales Ojeda would share here with the educators and children, another example that when there is will and results, everything is possible to achieve.
The working session of the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and the Secretary of Organization in Mayari, ended, as usual in these tours, with an exchange of about two hours with members of the municipal committee of the PCC and the first secretaries of the 14 municipalities of Holguin, among other leaders, on the priorities of the organization and the country for 2024 in the political-ideological and economic-social order for 2024, and the work projections of Mayari for this year.
