Holguin children honor José Martí on his birth anniversary

Hundreds of Holguin children from more than 50 schools honored this Saturday the memory of Cuban Apostle José Martí with a parade in commemoration of the 171st anniversary of his birth, celebrated every January 28.

During the march from Calixto García Park to the square named after the National Hero, school children from the municipality, educators, family members and the population in general, joined together to commemorate that life devoted to the homeland.

Alexa Fernández Fernández, head of the group and sixth grade student of the José Julián Martí Pérez elementary school, told the Cuban News Agency that there are not enough words to describe the greatness of Marti’s figure and his love for children, to whom he dedicated the most beautiful stories.

Wendy González Peña, a fourth-grade student of the same school, expressed her joy for participating in such an important date as part of the honor guard, where homage is paid to the man who fought for the freedom of his country.

Eugenio Aldana Rodríguez, father who attended with his two children, one and five years old, shared that since he was a child he used to go to the walk, a tradition that he now carries out with them and will maintain with his future grandchildren, since it is his commitment to educate them in the love for their nation and in the full knowledge of its history, of which José Martí is a fundamental piece.

During the cultural event, the Pulgarcito troupe of the María Antonia Bolmey boarding school performed a song in tribute to the most universal Cuban, where students from several schools raised their voices and recited Los zapaticos de rosa, a poem he wrote more than a century ago for those who know how to love.

Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary in the province; Manuel Francisco Hernández Aguilera, governor of Holguín, among other political, government and sector authorities, accompanied the schoolchildren during the day of jubilation.
