The recent election of Eiliana Cruz González as National President of the Pediatrics Section of the Cuban Nursing Society (SOCUENF) filled with joy those who know the work of this dedicated professional, scientist and continuous guardian of the quality of the work of the nursing staff of the Pediatric Hospital Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja, where she works as Head of that department.
This is a new responsibility to be assumed by one of the first two doctors in Nursing Sciences in Eastern Cuba.
What does it mean for Eiliana, a nursing professional, to assume the presidency of the Pediatrics Section of SOCUENF at the national level?
“Being president of the Pediatrics Section of SOCUENF is an honor but at the same time an important responsibility. It is a position that requires commitment, dedication and above all teamwork because the results obtained at the level of the pediatrics section will also depend on the work done in the different chapters in each of the provinces of the country”.
What challenges does the Pediatrics Section of the Cuban Nursing Society face in the near future?
“The main challenges facing the section are mainly based on the advances made in research and technology, i.e., promoting pediatric research and the use of advanced technologies in the research that is carried out. This is accompanied by training and continuing education through specialties, master’s degrees and doctorates that allow research to be carried out to solve the main problems identified.
“Another challenge is collaboration, which translates into working as a team with professionals from different chapters, which will allow for an exchange of evidence derived from healthcare practices”.
What do you consider to be the main roles assigned to the nursing staff in the healthcare system?
“Nursing staff in health services and specifically pediatric nurses have to be identified with ensuring patient safety and achieving quality care.
“This is achieved by maintaining a clinical, epidemiological, humanistic and inclusive approach in the profession. From the clinical point of view, consider all the elements of the behavior of the disease, the signs and symptoms. Epidemiological because they have to know how these diseases are behaving, what are the epidemiological elements that we must take into account in the patient interview. Also because the role played by the family is an important part of the child’s recovery. These pediatric patients have the fundamental characteristic that they will always be accompanied by a caregiver.
“Also humanistic because the nursing profession fundamentally must be accompanied by this component that allows to guarantee above all a professional and quality care in pediatric patients.”
As most of your research is directed to the care and attention of nursing staff to neonates with conditions admitted to the Regional Center for Neonatal Surgery. How can nurses contribute to the quality of life of surgical patients at this center?
“Undoubtedly, nurses can contribute to the quality of life of complex surgical newborns in many ways. Essentially if it achieves the continuous improvement we have referred to through the specialization of specific care in newborns with complex malformations. These types of patients need a staff with the necessary skills, they are patients who need specific care especially malformations of esophageal atresias, diaphragmatic hernias, anterior abdominal wall defects such as gastroschisis and omphalocele, intestinal atresias.
“Being a Regional Neonatal Surgery Center has allowed this staff to develop the necessary competencies for the care of these complex newborns.”
In the main results and favorable indicators of pediatrics are the hands of a multidisciplinary team of professionals where nursing is essential. Pediatric nursing requires great vocation, dedication, skill and solid knowledge.
