Program PAMI, a vital health objective in Holguin

The Mother – Child Care Program (PAMI for its Spanish acronym) is a priority for Public Health in theb Cuban province Holguin with actions that distinguish the work of key health institutions in the care of pregnant women, postpartum women and newborns.

In this last indicator last year 8,893 births were registered, 186 less than 2022, where the municipalities of Banes, Holguín, Cacocum, Cueto, Mayarí, Frank País and Sagua de Tánamo played a role.

Likewise, Holguín prioritizes how to revert in the current year a key indicator such as maternal mortality, since during 2023 the loss of five Holguín women was regretted.

The main causes of low birth weight, with an increasing behavior, are also analyzed, as well as how to ensure that the universe of more than 28,200 women in the province identified with increased reproductive risk, due to pre-existing diseases, can, if they wish, have a pregnancy with their disease under control.

Also, in collaboration with the Education sector, work is being done to solve health problems such as teenage pregnancy.

Among the main work plans for 2024 are the improvement of control measures in women of childbearing age, the hospital admission of intermediate or late pregnancies, the recovery of opportunities for early pregnancy; meanwhile, in the pediatric system, 12 measures are being improved and the intervention strategy is being implemented to reduce the late arrival of children with sepsis.

The constant challenges posed by PAMI in Holguin province, the third most populated province in the country, have not prevented the constant governmental attention to this program.
