Cathlen Gonzalez makes history in Holguin sports

Cathlen Gonzalez Rodriguez from Gibara made history in the sport of Holguín when she debuted this Friday with an easy victory by RSC in the third round against Yaneisi Gonzalez, from Mayabeque, to secure the bronze in the First National Championship of boxing for women held at the Rafael Trejo Hall in Havana.

Gonzalez, who became the first boxer from Holguin to grab a win and a medal in an official event, will return to the ring on Sunday 21 in search of silver and a ticket to Monday’s final, against Yoana Rodriguez, from Havana, who also beat Amanda Blanco, from Villa Clara, by RSC.

The other representative of Holguin in the boxing competition, Aliannis Céspedes, from Mayari, in the 50 kilograms, will face Norelis Sánchez, from Camagüey, this Saturday, also for bronze.

Of the 11 provinces represented, Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Guantanamo and Cienfuegos are attending with four boxers, Mayabeque and Granma with three, Holguin with two and Matanzas, Pinar del Rio and Camagüey with one.

Boxing is one of the oldest sports as well as wrestling. It is a contact sport, in which two people fight using only their fists, which are covered with a special glove.
