Holguín adds new members to the Cuban Academy of Sciences

Academy of Sciences of Cuba, new members from Holguín

After concluding the academic exercise corresponding to the five-year period 2018-2023, and in correspondence with the statutes that guide the operation of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba (ACC), four health professionals from the province of Holguin became new full members or young associates of this institution.

The selected scientists, with a relevant career in the research field at territorial, national and international level, will be part of the ACC in the period 2024-2029.

In the Biomedical Sciences section, Doctor of Sciences Jacqueline Medrano Montero, director of the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (Cirah), was elected as titular member; in the Social Sciences section, Doctor of Sciences Andria Torres Guerra, professor at the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin, was also elected as titular member. Alejandro Batista Izquierdo and Wilber Jesús Riverón Carralero were elected young associates.

As for what it means for the latter professional, a first-degree specialist in Internal Medicine, to be part of the prestigious academy, he said that it is an important challenge because it implies professional improvement, continuing to be active and contributing knowledge to science in every aspect, both in teaching and research. “With this renewal of the membership of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, being a member of the Oriente Norte branch, which corresponds to the province of Holguin, as well as having had the opportunity to represent Cuba in scientific events has been a unique possibility.”

Precisely, the constant improvement and the scientific results obtained by this 27-year-old young man from Holguin have contributed to the fact that he is currently pursuing doctoral studies, is a senior professor at the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo), holds the presidency of the Provincial Chapter of Internal Medicine and has participated as one of the 20 young people selected in Cuba to be part of the New Generation program, carried out by the Russian Federation.

This election of the ACC had its antecedents with the launching of the call in April 2023 for all scientific institutions in the country to carry out their internal selection process and proceed to nominate researchers and personalities with relevant trajectories. Subsequently, nomination forms were received from May to September.

Once the nomination period was over, in October the secret and direct vote was held for the election of the academicians and young associates in the five sections, the preparation of reports and the preparation for voting in the plenary.

The Honorary, Merit and Active Members exercised their right to vote for a total of 238 possible votes, of which 214 were received, for a representation of 89.91%.

This election process determined 241 full members, 64 young associates under 40 years of age with defended doctorates, except for two who are in the completion phase, and 64 new merit members, who are added to the existing 90. Thus, the new composition of the ACC for the period 2024-2029 is broadly integrated.
