Holguin in national campaign for skin cancer screening in albinos

One of the things that concern the Community of Albino People of Cuba (CPAC), called Coral Skin, is the realization of a national campaign of research to evaluate the presence of skin cancer in those who were born with this condition.

According to Iliana Pupo Herrera, sociologist of the Retinitis Pigmentosa Center, where the sub-site of the Albinism Community is located in Holguin: “We are united in provincial teams where the coordinators of the departments that attend all the disabilities participate, together with the dermatologists by provinces that assist the extension program of the HeberFERON product and the Board of Directors of the Coral Skin Community, with its albino leaders of each territory.

So the orientation for those who have the condition and are not yet in contact with the CPAC affiliates should go to their health areas and locate the specialist in Defectology, who will guide them on how to reach the dermatologists in charge of this task”.

The patient will undergo a thorough examination and in those cases that require it, a biopsy will be taken for histological, clinical and dermatoscopic diagnosis, in addition to including the indication for treatment, according to specialized criteria.

HeberFERON is indicated intradermally or intramuscularly in basal cell carcinomas. It can be used in lesions of any size, clinical subtype and location, as well as in high-risk lesions such as the facial area. Therefore, adding this biotechnological product to the treatment of skin cancer in albino people is one more treatment option.

The development of this national campaign for skin cancer screening in the albino population translates into a way to reach all the carriers of this condition in Cuba’s registries, even those who do not present skin lesions.
