The first year students of Medicine and Stomatology, who have scholarships at La Plaquita student residence, will have better living conditions in the next school year, after the remodeling of Tower 1-1 of this institution, which belongs to the Mariana Grajales Coello Faculty of Medical Sciences in Holguin.
During the reopening, which was attended by the rector of the university, Dr. Galina Galcerán Chacón, it was said that the work amounted to an estimated cost of about 15 million pesos in national currency, with actions that provided it with greater functionality and comfort.

Referring to the new conditions of this residence, José Alberto Mayo Rodríguez, first year student of Medicine and responsible for the Residence Attention Secretariat at university level, pointed out that “with an exploitation of 47 years since its creation, this tower was inaugurated by Fidel Castro in 1976. That is why it is so important for us. Its repair began at the beginning of this year, which with its completion has 16 dormitories and four study rooms.
“So each storey has four bedrooms and a study room apiece, of which three have the capacity for 10 students and one for 6, with a total availability for 144 students. The dormitories are brand new, with bunk beds and lockers, an interior bathroom per bedroom, as well as blinds, doors and bars for the safety of the students”.
Due to its size, level and complexity, this is one of the main maintenance works carried out by the University. Although it had been among the institution’s plans for several years, despite the complex economic situation, it was able to materialize.
In this regard, the dean of the Mariana Grajales Coello Faculty, Dr. George Augusto Velázquez Zúñiga, explains that “The University management kept the idea of carrying out the work with the support of all the factors of the center and to our satisfaction, just hours before the 65th anniversary of the Revolution, we carried out this official opening. With this, one of the largest residences in the country, the students who will enter on January 15 will benefit from the scholarship”.
José Raúl Arenas Mulet, a medical student also considers that the conditions created in this residence are superior. “It was structured with rooms with a very appropriate environment, with new doors and windows, for a better comfort and stay of the students in the residence, which will make their student life more enjoyable and productive.”
The inauguration of this student residence was part of the plan of activities of the university vanguard to commemorate the 101st anniversary of the founding of the University Student Federation and the 65th anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution.
