Ecured’s anniversary dedicated to Iroel Sanchez

The 13th anniversary of the Cuban Collaborative Encyclopedia EcuRed was dedicated to the memory and imprint of renowned journalist and political analyst Iroel Sánchez (1964-2023) during a ceremony held today at the Central Palace of Computing and Electronics in Havana.

Omar Pérez Salomón, an official of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and founder of EcuRed, described him as a living example that utopias are achievable.

Pérez Salomón praised the creativity and leadership capacity of the late revolutionary in tasks such as this, whose main purpose was the development in Cuba of a tool that has the knowledge of the different institutions to contribute, in turn, to digital decolonization.

Regarding Iroel Sanchez, he praised his sensitivity to social problems and the mark he left in his texts, a reference for the revolutionaries of the world.

Carlos Alarcón Palacios, chief specialist of the EcuRed technical group of the Institute of Scientific and Technological Information, recognized as achievements of the encyclopedia the opportunity it gives to its participants to publish open texts, the creation of contents related to Latin American countries, and the verification and improvement of its information.

Alarcón Palacios encouraged to continue with the work of the outstanding intellectual from the platform itself, which also aims to disseminate the achievements and realities of the Caribbean nation.

Mario Hernández Pastrana, General Director of Informatics of the Ministry of Communications (Mincom), highlighted that Ecured has managed to bring together users from other parts of the world in different areas of interest and has positioned itself as one of the most visited Cuban sites, with multiple national and international awards.

In the presence of family members and colleagues, Iroel Sánchez was posthumously awarded the Mario Muñoz Monroy distinction.

The work of the National Union of Historians of Cuba, its branch in the province of Artemisa, the Information and Technological Management Center of Guantánamo and the efforts of different collaborators in the sector were also recognized.

Iroel Sanchez, who died in Havana last May 18, was also the architect of projects such as the cultural magazine La Jiribilla, the blog La pupila insomne and the TV programs La pupila asombrada and Con Filo.

The Cuban Collaborative Encyclopedia EcuRed was officially launched on December 14, 2010, under the auspices of the Cuban government and various institutions, to provide universal knowledge in a .cu domain.

Present at the ceremony were Yudí Mercedes Rodríguez Hernández, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the PCC and head of the Department of Attention to Services; Erlin Rondón Cedeño, general secretary of the National Union of Communication, Informatics and Electronics Workers; Maydelis Pupo Torres, deputy director of Joven Club de Computación y Electrónica, as well as other directors and officials of the Mincom and other institutions.
