Heavy rains reported in the municipality of Moa, Holguín, Cuba

An accumulated rainfall of 66 millimeters in 45 minutes was recorded early this morning in the rain gauge of the municipality of Moa, Holguín province, as a result of the climatic instability generated by a rainstorm in the Caribbean Sea.

At the same time, the Nuevo Mundo dam, registered 80 millimeters, which caused floods in the Pedro Soto Alba neighborhood, known by Moa people as the ECRIN neighborhood, near the reservoir which accumulates more than 100 thousand cubic hectometers and is currently being relieved.

Jorge Luis Bosch Ortiz, deputy sub-delegate of Hydraulic Resources, pointed out that the dam is being closely monitored and that the Civil Defense protection measures are being complied with, which include the evacuation of more than 100 residents living in low areas.

He emphasized that this reservoirs in Holguin province are at more than 89 percent of their filling capacity, 10 are relieving and in case of rains of more than 100 millimeters this figure could reach 17, for which reason measures are being implemented to protect the population and the economic objectives.

There are also reports of damage to the sewers of poultry farms and the Yaguaneque road, which could increase in the coming hours due to weather forecasts of increased rainfall in eastern Cuba.

According to the Weather Institute, the combination of the rainstorm with a low pressure system will generate increased rainfall in the coming days, so the population is advised to remain alert to phenomena such as saturation of soils and flooding of rivers and streams.
