Doctors from the pediatric hospital Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja, María Migdalia Paneque Mendoza, deputy director of the Attention to the Seriously Ill, and Rosaida Marrero Rodríguez, infectiologist and second degree specialist in Pediatrics, were the only participants from the province of Holguín in the National Workshop on Pediatric Infectious Diseases, which took place between October 12 and 14.

Held at the Cojímar Convention Center in Havana, this workshop aimed at the update of knowledge on the management of infectious diseases in comprehensive community and hospital pediatric care, as well as care and protocols for infectious diseases, in pediatric epidemiological surveillance processes and the renewal of the National Immunization Program.

According to one of the participants from this northeastern territory, the pediatric hospital’s infectologist, “participating in this workshop has been very fruitful; we are updated on infectious diseases that affect Cuba and the Latin American area, with the explanation and presentation of experts in the field. The updates were approached with a very scientific character and in depth. We learned new data on diseases such as Dengue and other emerging diseases such as Tuberculosis. We also updated on certain infections that threaten to spread globally, such as smallpox.

The most important thing is that when we get to each one of our provinces, we are going to transfer this knowledge in our hospitals so that all health personnel have the tools and the knowledge on how to face, from a scientific point of view, these infections in patients who come to pediatric patients. We should always remember that prevention will be the first action that will allow us to favorably impact on the health of the youngest patients”.

Thus, this scientific exchange contributed to the competence and performance of the pediatricians in charge of coordinating this program, knowledge that will be put to use in the competent areas of Cuban pediatric institutions, a way to increase the quality of pediatric care for infectious diseases.
