Holguín protects flora of mountain areas

The protection of the endemic species of the flora in the moutain areas  of Holguin province is one of the goals of the specialists of Cuba‘s Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in this northeastern territory.

Through the promotion of scientific projects based on the natural regeneration of vegatble varieties, the natural regeneration of plant varieties, the experts promote the conservation of these plants adapted to specific conditions of humidity and soil in these reservoirs.

José Luis Gómez Echavarría, chief specialist in this area, told the CNA that Sierra de Nipe is one of the main sites, which stand among the most important endemic ecosystems in Cuba, with a large presence of local species exclusive to this height.

He indicated that the program has characterized the plant varieties, taking into account location, modes of reproduction and number of young specimens, in addition to the registration of young specimens, in addition to the registration of new populations.

He emphasized that the study, which began in 2020, will make it possible to extend environmental education actions in nearby communities through hiking, since most of the varieties live among the vegetation, are small and almost imperceptible.

Within the flora conservation programs in Holguín, institutions such as the Center for Research and Environmental Services, the Botanical Services and the Botanical Garden work together with the aim of preserving the ecosystemic balance and preventing the negative effects of meteorological phenomena and human action.
