Fidel Castro Center wins Grand Prize of National Architecture event

The activities of the XIV National Architecture event concluded with the awards ceremony held at the Hall of Flags of La Periquera Provincial Museum of History, one of the architectural symbols of Holguin.

After two days of fruitful exchange among the nearly sixty participants from all over the country and the evaluation of 75 works in competition, Ramon Recondo Perez, president of the National Society of Architecture, announced the jury’s verdict, which awarded the Grand Prize and Gold Medal nomination to Fidel Castro Center,  for the rescue of a mansion of the eclectic architecture of El Vedado, in Havana, which combines heritage restoration with contemporary elements, including technology.

Fidel Castro Center, said the jury, has achieved an impact at the urban level and has become the ideal space for the study and dissemination of the work of the maximum leader of the Cuban Revolution, largely thanks to the collective of authors, members of the RESTAURA project in Havana.

Meanwhile, in the Architectural Design Project category, the award went to architect Hernando Hernandez, from Ciego de Avila, for his work “Centro de Interpretación de la Trocha de Júcaro a Morón”, while in the Architectural Design Work category, the award went to “Office Buildings: from an idea to reality”, by architect Joel Iglesias, from Artemisia.

In the Heritage Intervention category, the award went to the team that undertook the restoration of the La Caridad Theater in Santa Clara, Villa Clara province, whose authors were Rachel Alvarez and Leonardo Puente, while in Conceptual Ideas, the prize went to “Antilla Business Center”, by architect Maribel Marrero, from Holguin.

In Theoretical and Critical Research, for being a document that addresses with critical thinking the problems of the city, based on the considerations of a renowned architect, collected in documentation and interviews, was awarded the work “Respect for the city”, by the Master of Science and architect Raul Figueredo from Holguin.

At the closing ceremony, the organizing committee of the Cuban architects’ contest invited the participants to participate in the next National event to be held in the central city of Cienfuegos in 2025.
