China donates solar panels to Holguin for change of energy matrix

A new solar panel park donated by the government of the People’s Republic of China will be installed in the municipality of Mayarí, in Holguín province, as part of the change of the energy matrix in Cuba, which depends 95 percent on fossil fuels.

It will be located in the area known as Serones, in the demarcation of Guaro and the site will have a generation capacity of five megawatts, through the use of sunlight, according to journalist Emilio Rodríguez Pupo, of Radio Mayarí.

This contribution represents 40 percent of the electricity demanded by the municipality of Mayarí, and at the same time it will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, harmful to the ozone layer.

The project is currently in the initial phase, and the conditions of the land and the necessary guarantees for the execution of the construction and assembly work are being evaluated.

The Chinese donation, which exceeds 114 million dollars, will also allow the gradual installation of photovoltaic parks in the municipalities of Holguín, Banes, Sagua de Tánamo, Rafael Freyre, Urbano Noris, and Gibara.

In Holguín province, the use of solar panels is also promoted in communities of hard-to-reach in the municipality of Báguano, and schools in the 14 municipalities through international solidarity networks from countries such as Canada and Luxemburg.
