For Jorge Gómez, a single question was enough to change his path. He was 21 years old and had been working as a driver at Telecristal for only two or three months. When Antonio Almaguer García—then the director of Radio Angulo—approached him. Almaguer asked if he would like to work as a driver for the radio station. Following a routine interview, he began his career at CMKO, driving a Lada.
When Almaguer left the station, Jorge moved on to drive a Girón 5 bus. A mobile broadcast unit that traveled across all 14 municipalities of Holguin province. Later, he drove a UAZ vehicle for the technical team, visiting various stations within the Provincial Radio System to provide maintenance. Subsequently, he spent six or seven years driving a Fiorino, a vehicle he frequently took on trips to Havana.
For the past eight years, he has operated the station’s modern mobile broadcast unit—a task he admits was quite complex at first. “It’s a computerized piece of equipment. Very different from anything I had encountered before.” He confesses that he read the manual over and over again until he fully understood how the vehicle functioned.

During outside broadcasts, he does more than just drive. He helps his colleagues with setup, moving cables, and handling whatever else is required. For over four decades, he has been an integral part of the Radio Angulo team. Supporting major journalistic coverage and live broadcasts for CMKO programs that enjoy high audience ratings and significant public interaction.
Perhaps most importantly, those of us who have had the chance to travel and work with him know the rules: no eating inside the vehicle, no entering while wet, and—above all—no slamming the doors. Jorge Gómez takes meticulous care of his vehicle. He has had the opportunity to work in other roles, but he has always declined. “My thing is driving. I’m a driver, first and foremost.”
Jorge Gómez has held a driver’s license since 1976, when he joined the Army, and he has spent every day since then behind the wheel. He has spent countless nights and early morning hours on the road. Nearly half a century of driving without a single accident. So, 47 years later, you can be completely confident that everything will be well.
