Baseball: “Wasps” Reclaim the Eastern Throne

On Wednesday, the “Avispas” (Wasps) of Santiago de Cuba took advantage of a loss by the “Alazanes” (Stallions) of Granma. To catch up with them once again at the top of the Eastern Zone, as the 65th National Baseball Series continued.

Managed by Idalberto Lamote, the team relied once more on its offensive firepower to defeat the “Indios” (Indians) of Guantanamo 12–6 at Nguyen Van Troi Stadium, securing their ninth win of the championship.

Eduardo García hit two home runs, one of them a grand slam. While Yoelquis Guibert reaffirmed his status as the league’s home run leader by hitting his ninth of the season.

Euclides Pérez and Jeison Martínez also cleared the fences, while Leonelkis Escalante and Robert Luis Delgado did the same for the losing side.

Meanwhile, the “Alazanes” fell 6–5 to the “Cachorros” (Cubs) of Holguin at Mártires de Barbados Stadium. Forcing them to share the top spot in the division.

Ernesto Torres hit a home run for the winners, while Alfredo Despaigne homered with two runners on base for the losing team during a late comeback attempt. Which ultimately proved insufficient to change the outcome.

The “Tigres” (Tigers) of Ciego de Avila and the “Gallos” (Roosters) of Sancti Spiritus also failed to capitalize on Granma’s defeat to climb to the top. Both remain one game behind the leaders.

At José Ramón Cepero Stadium, the “Tigres” suffered a 16–3 mercy-rule defeat at the hands of the “Leñadores” (Lumberjacks) of Las Tunas. In that game, Yassel Izaguirre hit a home run for the winners, and Jonathan Bridón did the same for the hosts.

Meanwhile, the Gallos fell 5-1 to the Toros de Camagüey at the Cándido González stadium. Following these results, the Eastern Zone standings show Granma and Santiago de Cuba tied at the top with a 9-6 record. Followed by Ciego de Avila, Sancti Spiritus, and Las Tunas (8-7), Holguin (7-8), Camagüey (6-9), and Guantanamo (5-10).

At the Capitán San Luis stadium, the Leones de Industriales defeated the league-leading Vegueros de Pinar del Rio twice, tightening the Western Zone standings.

The team from the capital won the first game 2-1, bolstered by the performance of Andy Vargas, who pitched five and two-thirds innings while allowing only one run. Frank Herrera recorded the final four outs, two of them by strikeout—to earn the save.

In the second game, the “Blues” (Industriales) won 4-2, scoring all their runs in the sixth inning. A single by Yaser Julio González drove in one of those runs and provided the decisive lead.
Carlos Manuel Cuesta pitched a complete game to secure the win, while Yosvani Martínez, appearing in relief, was charged with the loss.

In other results from this Wednesday’s marathon slate of games, the Cocodrilos de Matanzas swept the Elefantes de Cienfuegos. Winning 6-3 and 9-1, with Andrys Pérez hitting a home run in each game.

Villa Clara also swept their doubleheader against Mayabeque at the Augusto César Sandino stadium, winning the first game 8-1—highlighted by two home runs from Cristian Moré—and the second 6-0, thanks to home runs by Ronaldo Pérez and Leonardo Montero.

Finally, Artemisa and Isla de la Juventud split their doubleheader at the Cristóbal Labra stadium. The *Cazadores* (Hunters) won the first game 8–4—despite Frank David González hitting his eighth home run. While the *Piratas* (Pirates) bounced back in the second game with an 8–7 victory, bolstered by three RBIs from Alexander Almarales.

Following these results, Pinar del Rio remains at the top of the Western Zone with 11 wins and four losses. Followed by Matanzas (9–6), Industriales (7–6), Villa Clara (7–7), Artemisa (7–8), Cienfuegos (6–7), Mayabeque (5–7), and Isla de la Juventud (3–10).
