From October 24th to 30th, as part of the 32nd Ibero-American Culture Festival, the Provincial Center for Visual Arts and the “El Alba” Academy will host the 4th Gathering of Paper Artists. An event that invites creators, educators, and students to discover how plant pulp is transform into works of art.
This year’s gathering, themed “a return to the seed,” seeks to rediscover traditional handmade papermaking techniques. Also to explore their role within contemporary artistic practices.
Moreover the event aligns with the festival’s central theme “Ancestral Cultures, Contemporary Perspectives”. It serves as a space where the craft of papermaking engages with art education. One of the key focal points of this year’s edition in Holguin.
Furthermore the program features lectures, hands-on workshops, and exhibitions that will allow the public to witness the entire process. From the preparation of the pulp to the creation of three-dimensional pieces and artist’s book projects. The resulting works will become part of the Provincial Center for Visual Arts’ institutional collection, serving as a record of this fourth edition.
A defining feature of the event is its partnership with the “El Alba” Regional Academy of Visual Arts. Which is hosting the workshops and lectures for the first time. Students from the academy are not merely attending as an audience. They are actively participating in an event that was founded with a pedagogical and community-oriented mission.
The Gathering of Paper Artists is co-organized by the Provincial Center for Visual Arts, the “Cuadernos Papiro” publishing house, the Ibero-American Center, and the Florida Association of Paper Artists and Artisans.
For those approaching this practice for the first time, the event offers a gateway to a craft that combines sustainability with creativity. Handmade papermaking begins with recycling and the use of plant fibers. Those who engage in it often find it to be a space for experimentation that keeps them coming back.
As Manuel Arias, director of *Cuadernos Papiro*, summarized, the technique “captivates—it has a certain charm—and ensures that anyone who delves into the process will always return to try it again.”
With registration about to close, the invitation remains open to artists and creators who wish to join this edition. Full details are available at the Art Center, where staff can provide guidance on requirements and ways to participate in an event that. For one week, will turn Holguin into the epicenter of paper, both as a material and as an artistic language.
Finally registration closes on October 22nd and can be completed in person at the Art Center, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm.
