Progress in Sagua de Tanamo in Assisting Vulnerable Individuals

The municipality of Sagua de Tanamo, in the province of Holguin, is making steady progress in identifying and providing support to vulnerable individuals. As of the end of July, 3,203 such cases had been documented. Following a rigorous assessment based on new profiles established by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

This ongoing effort aims to ensure that social policies and assistance effectively reach those who truly need them. While adapting to the evolving circumstances of local families. To achieve this, the strategy relies on a comprehensive survey based on criteria developed at the national level. Following a pilot program implemented in six municipalities across the country.

Javier Deibeth Neira, the municipal director of Labor and Social Security, explained that the model initially identifies eight well-defined priority profiles. These include individuals covered by social assistance; households consisting of women over 60 or men over 65 living alone. Also at homes where pregnant women or children under the age of five reside.

The official specified that, regarding children, the criteria apply precisely up to the age of four years, eleven months, and 29 days. This also encompasses minors and adolescents who are underweight or have stunted growth, or who suffer from a chronic illness.

Furthermore, the system prioritizes single mothers—those who are heads of households—with three or more children.

As part of the methodological refinement, the framework includes a ninth profile designed to categorize situations that do not fit strictly into the aforementioned groups. In this regard, the municipal director noted that some initial inaccuracies have been identified. For instance, regarding elderly married couples, who should be categorized under the “others” group rather than being listed individually as single-person households.

This operational distinction is already being addressed in areas such as Sagua Norte. Also the process will continue across other districts to refine local statistics. While these adjustments do not change the total number of individuals receiving support, they allow for a more precise breakdown by category. Fostering a fairer assistance system that is better aligned with the daily realities of families in Sagua.

The steady progress of this initiative in Sagua de Tanamo reflects the Cuban State’s ongoing commitment to the social protection of its people. It reinforces an inclusive strategy that prioritizes the well-being of every family. Ensuring that no vulnerable citizen is left without support when facing the challenges of daily life.
