Iluminada, the Octogenarian Who Finds Inspiration in Fidel’s Legacy

On the eve of the centennial of Fidel Castro’s birth, stories that confirm his legacy emerge in the most ordinary places. Iluminada Gómez González, a retired member of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba in Holguin, is one of those voices. Eight decades of life have not diminished her energy. Today, her testimony reveals how the Commander-in-Chief’s influence survives in the most beautiful and difficult trench: the neighborhood.

Iluminada speaks with the conviction of someone who found her path long ago. “Fidel was my inspiration, and the legacy he left us, his teachings, always accompany me,” she affirms. Every day, she asks herself what he would do, what he would tell them. That moral compass keeps her active. Although she retired from formal employment, she never abandoned activism or revolutionary tasks.

“I am a committed revolutionary.” “I will work to the very end for what he taught us. Everyone who feels the homeland in their heart carries within them Fidel’s tireless dedication to helping, improving, and transforming. We owe him everything,” she states firmly.

Her daily life unfolds in the streets of her neighborhood. Also where she organizes activities, guides the younger generation, and resolves community problems. For Iluminada, every concrete action is a way of keeping the leader of Biran present. She doesn’t need long speeches to explain how a revolution is sustained: her steady walk through the block is the answer.

In times that exalt the ephemeral, Fidel’s legacy finds refuge in the wrinkled hands that refuse to give up. Hands that, without asking permission, continue building the possible Cuba that that giant of Biran dreamed of.
