Medical Students Strengthen Primary Healthcare in Holguin

With the incorporation of medical students into the work of family doctors and nurses. The province of Holguin is strengthening primary healthcare amidst the energy crisis currently affecting the country.

The decision responds to adjustments aimed at continuing the training processes at the University of Medical Sciences in the current context. Promoting the quality preparation of future doctors, George Velázquez Zúñiga, rector of the university, told CNA.

He specified that the students will carry out screening activities. Monitoring of vulnerable sectors, and health checks in hard-to-reach areas, essential for their professional development.

Also he emphasized that all students have options to continue their educational process. With the adjustments to the academic calendar, where self-study is essential. He explained that third-, fourth-, and fifth-year students will be assigned to hospitals and polyclinics in the 14 municipalities of the eastern province. They will have tutors to guide them through their activities.

Students residing in remote areas will receive differentiated support through virtual learning. Utilizing digital resources, the rector emphasized.

Holguin has more than a thousand medical offices with a program designed to address 70 percent of health problems at the primary care level.
