In the rural areas of Holguin province, a community initiative is building a network of support and human warmth. This initiative, the Community Food Programs, with the backing of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and local authorities. It guarantees a daily meal for vulnerable people. Prioritizing senior citizens, people with disabilities, and other at-risk groups.
The program, which began as a pilot project in municipalities like Calixto García and Cacocum. Also it is already showing its first results. Beyond simply providing a nutritious meal. Moreover the project serves as a social protection mechanism that combines institutional management, family participation, and grassroots community solidarity.
Regarding this community-based response, Ángela María García Martínez. Who runs one of these programs in the municipality of Calixto García, explains the essence of the project: “This is a community-based response for those who need it most. I serve them from my home. I have 10 people eating here, and I try to have their meals ready early.”

“The best way to show our gratitude is through their smiles and kind treatment.” Their testimony reflects the spirit of an effort that seeks to alleviate needs from within the community itself, involving its residents.
Beneficiaries like Gilberto and Eudelia, residents of these areas in the Las Casimbas community, are grateful for the initiative. For them, the value lies not only in the food itself. But also in the attention and sense of belonging that is strengthened by receiving support from their neighbors and local authorities.
Orlando Santos Díaz, Director of Gastronomy and Commerce in the province of Holguin, detailed the origin and operation of the project. He explained that it arose as part of the strategies to strengthen the social safety net in the most remote communities. Where access to services can be more difficult.

“The supply to these households is carried out through established mechanisms. Guaranteeing the necessary raw materials for preparing the meals. It is a coordinated effort between the local government, the commercial sector, and the willingness of families who open their homes to serve,” he added.
A model that dignifies and protects the Community Food Center project is consolidating itself. As a concrete example of organized solidarity. It places the most vulnerable at its center. Transforming into a mechanism of dignity and mutual care.
It represents an effective model where state management and popular participation intertwine. Demonstrating that the most sustainable and humane solutions often emerge and are strengthened from the heart of communities.
This Holguin experience, which continues its gradual expansion throughout the province. It confirms the value of collective responses to adversity.
