As part of this anniversary celebration, the CPAP (Center for Visual Arts and Performing Arts) leadership and the Sectoral Culture Department presented the Electa Arenal Lifetime Achievement Award. To sculptors Argelio Cobiella Rodríguez and Silvio Pérez Carralero. Who have championed three-dimensional art in Holguin for decades.
Cobiella Rodríguez was also recognized with the Codema National Salon Award for his work “Entangled in Your Fluids.” Valued not only for the exhibition itself but also for the discussion and underlying themes of the piece. Presented in workshops and panels throughout the day.
During her opening remarks, curator Bertha Beltrán highlighted the challenge of organizing an exhibition while respecting a legacy of nearly four decades in the Holguin visual arts scene. Serving as a platform for the expressions, methods, and practices of artists.
She reflected on the changes that have occurred since its inception. Noting that although painting and printmaking formats prevail, sculpture has remained relegated. In the creative process, convenience and commercialism have gained ground. Limiting creative endeavors and distancing the artist from their social role.
Also she recalled that the City Salon exists to replace the decorative and the saccharine commercialism. With the purpose of demonstrating that art is free and authentic, an expression of its environment and, above all, of its time.
The main prize of the competition will be announced at the City Awards gala this Sunday. In celebration of the 274th anniversary of the founding of the Holguin municipality. While collateral prizes, such as the one awarded by the Florida Paper Artists Association, were left unawarded due to a lack of submissions.
